Marathon Over For Glyn

A Black Country running champion, who has crossed the finish line in more than 60 marathons, will never run again after a shock discovery during a routine operation.

Glyn Marston went into surgery on Saturday to have a cartilage operation but the surgeon found the damage to his right knee was irreparable and he was told he must have a complete knee replacement.

The shock news puts an end to the Willenhall man’s glittering running career.

Mr Marston said: “I always said that to stop me running you would have to cut off my legs.

The 44-year-old father-of-two has run 65 marathons and 46 ultra distance races, which vary from 32 to 153 miles.

“I have no regrets, if I had my time again I would do it all exactly the same.”

Mr Marston must return to hospital in six weeks to talk over the procedure with the surgeon. He will then join the waiting list for the operation. He said: “I have been told in no uncertain terms that if I run after the op I will end up in a wheelchair.”

He now plans to concentrate on swimming and cycling and coaching his son Liam, aged 15, who is also a keen runner.

Their dream had been to run the London Marathon together but now this is impossible.
